Movies are no longer an escape. Gone are the days when the “apocalypse” was a made up concept for a film plot. Christians in the Middle East, Africa and other parts of the world are being tortured, slaughtered, raped, beheaded, kidnapped and forced to flee. There are no less than ten wars occurring around the world as we speak. The IS (also known as I.S.I.S.) is going around the Middle East and they are destroying historical sites in an attempt to erase history. Boko Haram have kidnapped, raped and murdered thousands of people and they have made an agreement with the IS. This weekend Shia seized Yemen City and the situation got so bad the US Military had to leave. And in several countries in Europe, Jews are being quietly harassed. The world is in uproar and lacking greatly in stability.
With all this evil and darkness squelching us every day, it’s shocking to me how unaware much of my generation is of these issues. Social Media has become blanket coverage, hiding the real issues with the world. Instead of reading about the slaughtering of innocent lives on my news-feed, all I ever see is useless information. I struggle with maintaining a hopeful perspective among this darkness. This is exactly why hope is necessary and why we see it so often in films nowadays. It is important in times as bleak as these to maintain hope, have courage and be kind.
I feel blessed to be in a generation full of passionate, intelligent and compassionate people. It is possible to fight the evils around the world where we are. The internet is a powerful web that connects us all and we can use this tool to spread hope. Imagine this, a cup full of dirty water, while seemingly a hopeless cause to ever be clear again, if we simply add in fresh water, drop by drop the waters clarity increases. We can be these drops, if we take a stand and spread light and hope from every corner of the world, the heaviness on souls will decrease.
I am a dreamer for a better world. I believe we are capable of even greater things than humanity has already achieved, and I also know that all of us have both light and dark within us. What matters is which direction we decide to take. “Live by faith, hold fast to hope and show compassion to one another.” - Jeffrey R. Holland
